GuideStar's mission is to promote philanthropy by helping donors, institutional funders, and charities become more informed, effective, and efficient. You may search GuideStar's database of more than 700,000 U.S. nonprofit organizations. 

Better Business Bureau’s Philanthropic Advisory Service
Better Business Bureau’s Philanthropic Advisory Service provides donors and potential donors with an impartial source for information on nationally soliciting charitable organizations and for advice on sound giving practices.

Idealist
Project of Action Without Borders - services and tools about and for nonprofit organizations. Idealist has a database of 22,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 150 countries in a searchable database.

National Charities Information Bureau
The BBB Wise Giving Alliance collects and distributes information on hundreds of nonprofit organizations that solicit nationally or have national or international program services. It routinely asks such organizations for information about their programs, governance, fund raising practices, and finances when the charities have been the subject of inquiries. This information is available to donors in the form of a charity report.
